No More Yawning!
By Paeony Lewis
Illustrated by Brita Granström
It’s bedtime for Florence and Arnold.
It’s seven o’clock and Florence’s yawns are getting bigger and bigger. But how can she and her much-loved toy monkey, Arnold, possibly get to sleep when there’s goodnight kissing, singing, stories, counting and drawing to be done? Eventually, an exhausted Mum thinks she might know how!

(I adore Brita’s endpapers on the hardback editions - a mass of drawings by Florence.)
Following on from No More Biscuits, this is the second story about the mischievous pair, Florence and Arnold.
Once again, my daughter inspired this story (I’ve been asked if she really is as determined as Florence - unfortunately my daughter is MORE determined!). We tried lots of methods to help her to sleep and for us what works for Florence also helps my daughter. The sleep tips at the end of the book also came about through our sleepy attempts to get a certain young lady to GO TO SLEEP!
News - No More Yawning has been recorded by the BBC for CBeebies radio.
Reading suggestions:
When you’re sharing the story at bedtime, see if you can spot the clocks (they’re on lots of pages).
Whenever Florence yawns in the story, it’s fun if everybody yawns too, with yawns becoming bigger and bigger...

“...wonderful lapsit...”
- School Library Journal
“...This is a lovely story to read aloud and the hints and tips about bedtime at the very end of the book make this a must have for all children's bookshelves.” - Bookseller review, Waterstones
“...a perfect bedtime story for sleepy children - it is fun, light-hearted and sure to encourage lots of yawns... A brilliantly conceived book all about bedtime...” - Write Away
“...amusing for both children and their harassed carers.”
- The Northern Echo
“...You have to feel for Florence and her exasperated mum in this sweet story, because we’ve all been there...
Busy, colourful illustrations prompt lots of discussion, not least watching the time tick by on various unobtrusive clock faces. Florence’s ‘tips on getting to sleep’ when the story is over are a nice touch. Light and informative, these offer strategies that will help give a restless child a sense of control.”
- Armadillo
“...the clever repetitive refrain running through the book adds a lively element to the telling. ...excellent illustrations...

“Florence and her plush monkey Arnold are tucked in for the night…but it’s Arnold who just doesn’t go to sleep. A funny good night time book that just might give young readers a laugh and some delaying tactics. Read it at your own peril. Good fun!” 4 & up.
